Disclosure – Affiliate Marketing

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing allows websites like ours to display special links to products or services we endorse, so that when people make purchases through those special links we get a small commission on the sale.

There is no extra cost to you, you just pay the standard price for the item as if you had found it and bought it any other way. We simply take a small percentage of the sale price from the company or marketplace that sells the product, as kind of a ‘thank you’ for finding them a new customer.

There are a lot of websites that operate this way and essentially market another company’s products for them. Some of them practice affiliate marketing more honestly and scrupulously than others. We always want to be upfront about what we do however, so you can make an informed choice about what you’re reading on the site.

How Is Affiliate Marketing Used On This Site?

We post affiliate links both for ultralight gear we have personally reviewed and rate, and also some for gear we have not reviewed. Our two primary affiliate programs are with Amazon and Ali Express. This means that as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. And the same goes for any product you buy through our links from Ali Express.

Why Do You Post Affiliate Links For Gear You Haven’t Personaly Tested?

From time to time, we may post articles on our blog for new pieces of gear that we haven’t had the chance to try yet. Such an article may, for instance, be called something like ‘Top 10 pieces of ultralight gear we’re excited to try for the upcoming hiking season’. In such instances, we want to give people the opportunity to try out items that we like the look of but haven’t had the opportunity to properly report on yet.

Why Affiliate Marketing?

Simply put, affiliate marketing, along with advertising, is how we meet the website’s running costs. And maybe occasionally have enough money left over for a beer or two. We’re not in this to get rich, and are certainly not anticipating that that would ever happen. But if it somehow does, we’ll be sure to update this disclaimer accordingly!
